Generally, online entrepreneurs have many tasks to carry out during the day, and because these tasks are all online, there can often be many distractions. Not only this, but we also often work long hours and have a hard time balancing life along with it.
Imagine having to take your children into an office day job – hardly anything would get done, and you would be pretty ragged by the end of the day… The best way to combat these issues is with scheduling and impeccable timing.
Here are a few tips to keep your online business on-schedule:
Tip #1 – Get your timing right.
When you need to concentrate on projects and focus your attention, do this outside of normal working hours. I find spending time on thought intensive tasks is best done when the rest of the world is doing other things, either really early in the morning, or early evening/night.
Tip #2 – Turn off automatic notifications.
Don’t have your email on automatic notifications. Use a service like “Away Find” to avoid diving into your Inbox every few minutes. That way you will still be informed of all urgent highly important e-mails that cannot wait, and the rest of the time, you can get on with the task in hand. Try to limit your Skype or IM time to logging in for a few hours a day tops.
Tip #3 – Go mobile as much as possible.
Use a mobile device such as an iPad or a laptop to get yourself away from the desk. They say a change is as good as a rest and a change of scenery often works for me.
Tip #4 – Make lists.
Lists are a great way to break up the day, and before you leave the office each evening, always make sure you plan out the important things you want to get done the following day, and make sure you prioritise these first thing.
Tip #5 – Oven ready productivity.
Use the time-boxing technique for task clearance. Instead of starting a project and timing from the start how long it takes, use a software program like “Click Clock” to actually set a specific time to have the task done by. This way, you can schedule your day according to the amount of time you have available to you, and it’s also a great motivator while you are working to try and beat the clock. You set the time, for example at 30 minutes, and it will count backwards and let you know when your time is up, a bit like an oven timer!
Tip #6 – Schedule regular tasks.
Make sure you have a daily or weekly schedule of essential tasks that need to be done, and get those out of the way as soon as you can, this will help you focus your attention on setting standards and keeping everything ticking over in the business. These are tasks such as keeping up with your social media, RSS news feeds, emails and personal bits and pieces.
Tip #7 – Admit defeat when you are cracking up.
Being an entrepreneur is both thrilling, yet stressful. We have to juggle many balls in the air, have lots of ideas and business related thoughts running around in our heads, we have staff, families, dogs, cats etc… Plus many other responsibilities, so when the going gets tough and you feel like you are about to crack up, take a breather. Go for a walk, get some fresh air, take a bath, buy yourself a treat, watch a movie… Anything that will bring you back down to earth, and put things into perspective.
While we all love our business endeavours, we have to take the rough with the smooth, and ‘Get a little perspective now and again.’ Sometime a break is just what you need to get your productivity back on track!
