7 Warning Signs – Are You Becoming Crazy Obsessed With Your Business?

Michelle Dale - Friday, July 22, 2011
I don’t know about you, but I love my business to the point where sometimes I find it really hard to peel myself away from it, I do realise on occasion that some of my behaviour towards my business resembles that of my children in a way, a child who doesn’t want to go to bed because they are afraid they will miss something important, a new update or exciting development, and having to stop what I’m doing, or ‘playing’ to do something else which I find less interesting… All in all there is a solid enthusiasm I have for my business, but at what point does that enthusiasm turn to obsession?

There are certain things at times I have to stop myself from doing these days to keep a level head, and from working closely with virtual assistants I have noticed that these things can often be common among enthused, highly driven online entrepreneurs.

1. Social Media Maniac

You’re checking social media 30 times a day

Facebook and Twitter are an integral part of my business, they go together like peas and carrots and I use them a lot for interacting and business development, but there comes a point where obsessing over the updates and replies can sometimes prevent you from getting on with other things which need an equal amount of your attention.

2. Email Junkie

You leave your email open constantly

In my experience email can be checked around twice per day for a virtual assistant, without the world falling apart, possibly 3 times if you are actively marketing for new business and expecting enquiries.

3. Comment Crazy

You’re consistently looking at your blog for interaction

My blog is like my second home, I love it, but there needs to be a bit of a cap on the amount of times that you check for shares and comments, even though it is lovely to see it, sometimes it’s good to leave it a while… Stick to moderating your blog a couple of times a day rather than every hour.

4. Mr. or Mrs. Moody

You keep working when you’re feeling tired and irritable

If you find yourself becoming tired and irritable to the point where you’re unproductive yet still trying to carry on with your work, and not allowing yourself a break, then you are not doing yourself any favours. Work, even when it’s hard and time consuming should still be enjoyable. Next time you feel whacked, ask yourself if what your doing absolutely must be done now, or could it wait? Don’t push yourself too hard to the point where it becomes unhealthy.

5. Feeling Forgetful

You’re missing important things in your life

Have you noticed yourself forgetting family birthdays or social events? Are you telling your kids there’s no time to do the things they want to do, working on weekends or during times when you could be spending more time with them, and missing simple things like reading them a story at night, or skipping family meal times to get an extra hour of work in… Be aware of your behaviour and make sure your business is not always taking priority.

6. Frowny Face

You can’t remember the last time you laughed or had fun

If you are the point where you really can’t remember the last time that you went out, or had a good laugh or really enjoyed yourself and had fun, which was totally unrelated to working or the business, then you have been obsessing over your business way too much, and it’s time for a wake up call.

7. Just 5 More Minutes!!

All you need is just 5 more minutes, then you’ll stop working… right?

Is it really late and you need to go to bed, or you haven’t eaten for ages and need a proper meal, but you are just going to work for 5 more minutes… then 3 hours later, just 5 more minutes!! — 5 more minutes can sometimes last for hours, keeping you from other important things like, ummm eating and sleeping.

People often say that if you find a job you love doing, you’ll never work another day of your life, while this is true in many respects, we still have to be aware that we can sometimes become a little over enthusiastic in our entrepreneurial spirit and that can sometimes have a habit of taking over our lives.

Keep your business interests enjoyable and healthy, always work smart, it’s really the best thing you can do for you, your family and your company. Now it’s Friday! Do something fun!
