There have been so many questions raised facing the new EU cookie compliance law, that I decided I would go out and investigate what could be the quickest, easiest and most attractive solution for online service providers and their clients to comply with this new law. If you don’t know about the Cookie Law yet, there is a pretty good article on Forbes which explains it.
It’s a pain, but that’s the way the cookie crumbles. (Ha Ha – I had to get that in somewhere.)
I found a host of suggestions, and WordPress plugins, but wanted to find something universal (and of course free!) so no matter what you were working on for a client you could simply go and grab it, install it and call it done. The best option I found for this was a tool called Cookie Control and another called Cookie Consent, I think either of these would be great to use and recommend to clients.
This basically adds a little label to the corner of your website, and also creates a pop up for people to accept or deny your cookies. It’s unobtrusive, it looks smart and it does the job nicely in my opinion. At the moment they offer plugins for WordPress, Drupal 7 and Magneto, plus if you want to install it on a site that’s not any of those, you can configure an option that will generate a piece of code for you to add to your site, so basically it’s a “one stop shop.”
This one is very similar to Cookie Control but has more features and is more conservative looking, I also like the fact that it’s only shown to EU visitors. It’s classy, elegant and does the job nicely.
I’ll let the video below do the rest of the talking…
There you have it, (2) solutions which could potentially match any website you’re working on.
