Web Design Tips You Can’t Ignore
July 12, 2010
Web design is an elaborate subject when taking into account the various factors that contribute to creating a good website. Your aim with designing a site is to not only be appealing to your visitors but also getting high rankings for it in the search engines. However, even if your site makes a good impression on the search engines, if visitors don’t stay on it because it is unattractive, you haven’t achieved much. The “bounce rate” of people who come to your website and leave immediately is mainly owed to the aesthetic appeal of your site. For this reason, emphasizing good web design is critical for efficient results over the long term. Some sites do great with search engines but achieve very few sales. This article will be exploring the various tips that you can use when working with web designing.
If you want your website to be interesting and if you want your visitors coming back then focus on providing useful content that helps them. The aesthetic components of your design might be effective in creating the wow factor when people visit your site but to have them return you need to offer interesting content. Since people are always seeking fresh content when they are online, you can do this simply by making sure you add new information regularly. If you want to make sure people actually read your content you must make it interesting as well because many articles are ignored because they are boring even if the information is useful. Your content shouldn’t be stale at all, it needs to be full of life so you must write just like you talk. Additionally, make sure your content is not too long and is easy to read because most people don’t have the patience to read through lots of information at one time. Also remember to enquire what they think of your site. In the long run, communicating with your visitors will be an advantage. When you have visuals on your site, they aren’t just to make it “look good” but are much more than that. The visuals should be used to effectively communicate the correct message to your visitors. You can use colors to both present your company’s image and also to communicate with all of the visitors that come to your site. For instance, you would likely use green majorly on the site and distribute it around if you had a site about “going green”. If your site is about selling kids toys, to cite another example, you would use bright, solid colors to represent that subject. There are lots of ways you can use visuals to present your site in a positive way. They can also be used for the purpose of highlighting, like buttons to highlight certain links, which makes navigation easier. Apart from this, you can use visual images such as arrows/bold text to direct your visitor to a different page.
Keep the copy on your website completely readable, as that’s the most important part of your site. It’s never a good idea to put red text on a black background. You’ll instead want to stick to regular black text on a white background, which will always work. You’ll want to make it as easy for visitors to read your copy as possible. All the traffic in the world won’t help you if nobody gets around to reading your site’s copy.
Good design principles include making sure you get all the right stuff in their rightful places. Traffic is vital, of course, but if they all think your site sucks… well, you know what to do.
