Ways You Can Avoid An Affiliate Program That Doesn’t Fit Your Needs

December 21, 2009

Affiliate marketing can be a terrific way to generate income, but there are a few pitfalls you must avoid. A product may be extremely hot, but is it ultimately the right product for you? Contrary to what most people believe, the most success comes from being passionate about a product. The passion itself generates energy and drive, and these are factors that your potential customers will tune in to. Either it’s there or it isn’t.

Problems arise when the affiliate marketer tries to join too many programs at once. You could be thinking about of creating multiple sources of income, but the dollar amounts in the income column never materialize. It just becomes too hard to concentrate on too many different directions at once. Stay with a single product that pays at least a 40% commission and then give the program your undivided attention. If you cannot succeed with that program the chances of making several programs profitable are quite remote.

Make sure to find out how the merchant will pay you, and how often the merchant will pay you. Also, make sure you understand how the merchant is going to charge customers for the product. You do not want the referrals you send to be lost because of customer payments that don’t get tied into your referral ID number. Unfortunately, some product owners may not opt to reveal the information you need.

So once you know you can get traffic to a product using research tools like Micro Niche Finder what do you focus on? The mistake that hopeful affiliates often make is not being familiar with the product. This means that you will not be able to relay the message successfully without first-hand knowledge. A good way to locate the winning products is to buy the product before joining the affiliate program. However, keep your expenditures low or you’ll be squandering your income on products or services you don’t need.

Know the vendor’s customer service and refund policy. If it is not up to par, you could be spinning your wheels by referring your best customers. Perhaps the most valuable factor to check is how well the merchant supports its affiliates. If you are not getting questions answered on time and in depth, it could be time to join a different program.
